General Counselor
Counselor Roles
We need counselors for many different roles at The Heart. Where do your skills fit?
“I love that The Heart is a place where girls gain confidence and manners. A place where leadership skills are honed and opportunity is given.”
“I love Sundays. It’s the best day to bond with your kids and relax. Counselor hill is the best evening of the term to get an insight into the tribes.”
“The focus of friendship is a definite strength in Heart’s philosophy. The bonds between the girls and their desire to always help and support each other are inspiring.”
“Counselor hill, sisterhoods in general, and the memory of Jo Jones and warm fuzzies -- all make Heart O' the Hills special!"
“I love all of the traditions here at HOH. Here, girls are taught how to be better people by having such good role models – KEEP ALL THE TRADITIONS!”
“Friendship! Teaching girls to accept each other as they are, and that we are all equal here. There are no judgments.”
Heart LITe Program
Leaders-in-Training (Heart LITes): A Unique Opportunity
The Heart LITe Program offers an invaluable experience for those who have outgrown being campers but aren’t yet eligible to be counselors. It’s a demanding role that is both challenging and rewarding, providing a chance to develop leadership skills and gain a deeper understanding of camp life.
In the words of a former LITe:
“Being a Heart LITe was a difficult job. You wake up before everyone else and go to bed after everyone else. You work behind the scenes with little to no appreciation. If glamor is your desire, then being a Heart LITe is not for you. HOWEVER, if you want to work with children who love you and women who are great leaders and teachers in a beautiful Texas landscape while volunteering your time and energy to make camp a home away from home for girls who may need it more than you think, then Heart LITe-ing is the best thing you can do for yourself and your future.”
What Are My Responsibilities?
As a Heart LITe, your role is integral to the smooth running of camp. Responsibilities include:
-
Supporting Counselors: Assist counselors with their assigned tepee of young campers by helping with morning routines, including making beds, braiding hair, and preparing for the day’s activities.
-
Dining Hall Duties: Help Juniors prepare the dining hall for meals, serve refills during meals, and clear tables afterward.
-
Routine Tasks: Participate in sorting and distributing mail, handing out snacks after siesta, and checking tepees for cleanliness and order.
-
Class Assistance: Rotate through various classes, helping to teach and manage activities.
-
Variety of Duties: Engage in a range of tasks that keep camp running smoothly.
